Casita de Puebla
This illustration is a real location in the state of Puebla, Mexico. It belonged to my grandmother and now to my mother. As a child, I would spend summers with my grandma in Mexico and even attended school to continue learning Spanish fluently.
Today, it has slightly been renovated and the land has expanded to my great aunt’s home next door. We have a great view of Popocatépetl.
The Process: Exterior + Interior Illustration
This project was an assignment given in my Contemporary Illustration class. We were to create a spot illustration of a building of our choosing. I decided on a childhood home and debated between my home in the United States and Mexico.
With very minimal space, it was challenge to implement significant quirks such as the makeshift grill, the outdoor shower and garden that goes around the home.
I wanted the canvas to be a 1:1 but later expanded it so the interior environment didn’t feel clustered. The origonal ideal I had was a child version of myself fanning the flames so my grandma can make tortillas. The cat is a homage to my great aunt’s cat Pancha, who sadly passed away but her kittens live on. The chairs are significant to my culture as it was the cheapest chair to buy in bulks, perfect for when family come over for some pan dulce and coffee.
